Meetings of the UNGEGN WG Convenors on AI & GN

The Expanded Bureau supports the idea to arrange a separate web meeting on the issues related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and geographical names in order to exchange ideas and experiences.

At the last 2025 session the emergent topic of AI underscored UNGEGN’s role to facilitate the consideration and agreement to enhance linguistic consistency, respect national naming conventions, and develop technological capacities. This topic offers an opportunity to share mutual experiences of good practice, amongst others with the UN-GGIM Committee of Experts, and work towards the development of norms and standards.

This group of Convenors and Bureau members meet to discuss the following matters:

• Use cases AI4GN
• Discussion of challenges, obstacles and opportunities
• Ideas to provide guidance that furthers coherence, strengthens partnerships, and promotes the practical implementation of our/UNGEGN's interest

At the first meeting on 28.11.2025 the group agreed to join for a follow-up-meeting at the end of January 2026.

The aim of the group has been agreed to 

• provide information on the general usage of AI tools
• provide guidance for the use of AI for GN standardisation
